New Technology: NeoReader

In the grand tradition of UPC codes, ScanBuy/ScanLife & the NeoReader application from NeoMedia Technologies are attempting to barcode the world. Their mission: to allow companies and individuals to place small barcodes on their marketing materials that are readable by over 70 phone models including an upcoming application for the iPhone.

The technology uses camera phones to connect the physical world to the digital world. The application reads 2D barcode formats designed to quickly recognize and process information. It’s easy to use - launch the application on your phone, click on the barcode with your camera and the content is delivered to your phone. No typing long URLs into your browser, no menus to navigate.

Marketers and content providers can use ScanLife (www.scanlife.com) and NeoReader (www.neoreader.com) to extend brand engagement onto mobile devices, while end users can scan codes to get information quickly and easily. A 2D code on a poster or product can drive consumers to the web where they can enter an online Sweeps or Instant Win Game, download a ringtone or wallpaper, or get product info. A code on a business card can lead you to a Facebook or LinkedIn page. Imagine being able to scan a product barcode with your phone then get a list of all the local outlets stocking it - along with the prices. One-click access to mobile content – simplicity in a complicated world.

NeoMedia Technologies grandfathered this technology back in the mid 90’s and have been doing mobile code scanning and comparison shopping via UPC codes long before any other company in this space.
